If the sea could talk, Cornwall’s coast would have some stories to tell. From daring smugglers and heroic lifeboat crews to centuries of fishing and shipbuilding, Cornwall’s maritime heritage is as deep and fascinating as the ocean itself – and it’s all waiting to be explored during your stay at Harlyn Sands.
Whether you’re a history buff, a curious little pirate, or just fancy a day away from the beach, here are some brilliant ways to dive into Cornwall’s salty seafaring past.
National Maritime Museum Cornwall – Falmouth
Just over an hour’s drive from Harlyn Sands, the National Maritime Museum in Falmouth is the place to start. With interactive exhibits, historic boats, and hands-on activities for kids, it brings Cornwall’s seafaring past to life. Don’t miss the lookout tower for a cracking view over Falmouth Harbour!
Padstow Museum
Closer to home, Padstow Museum is a small but mighty treasure trove just down the road. You’ll find everything from old photos and ship models to tales of Padstow’s fishing and lifeboat history. It’s free to enter, and just a short wander from the harbour.
Charlestown Harbour & Shipwreck Museum
If you’ve ever watched Poldark, you’ll recognise Charlestown Harbour, a beautifully preserved Georgian port that’s still home to tall ships and brimming with old-world charm. Wander the harbour walls, take in the views, and imagine what life was like when the port was bustling with trading ships and seafarers. It’s a brilliant place for a scenic stroll and a few photos, and there’s a great little café or two nearby for a post-adventure treat.
Tintagel & the Legend of the Sea
While not strictly a maritime museum, Tintagel Castle is steeped in sea legend. Set high above the waves, this dramatic ruin is linked to King Arthur and packed with mystery, myth and views that’ll take your breath away.
Lifeboat Stations & Coastal Walks
Cornwall’s coast is dotted with RNLI lifeboat stations, many of which are open to the public. Why not visit the one in Padstow, or even further afield in St Ives or Fowey? They’re a brilliant way to learn about the brave crews who’ve kept Cornwall’s shores safe for generations.
And if you’re staying with us at Harlyn Sands, you might just spot a familiar face – our very own Wes is a proud member of the Padstow Lifeboat Team! So don’t be shy about asking him for a story or two – he’s got some crackers.
Sea, Salt and Stories Waiting to be Discovered
From ancient harbours to modern museums, exploring Cornwall’s maritime heritage is a great way to mix a bit of history into your holiday. And the best part? You’re never far from a pasty, a pint, or a paddle in the sea afterwards.
Planning your trip? Make Harlyn Sands your base and discover the stories behind the shore.
