St Piran’s Day in Cornwall is a proud and meaningful date in the Cornish calendar. Celebrated each year on 5 March, it honours Cornwall’s patron saint and the rich heritage that shapes this special corner of the UK.
Although we are not yet open for the season at Harlyn Sands, St Piran’s Day always feels like the true start of spring here. The days grow lighter. The sea begins to sparkle again. And there is a quiet excitement that a new season is on its way 🌊
Who was St Piran?
St Piran is believed to have been a 5th-century abbot from Ireland. Legend says he floated across the sea on a millstone. He eventually landed on the Cornish coast.
He is best known as the patron saint of tin miners. According to tradition, he discovered tin when black rocks were heated in a fire. A white cross of tin formed in the ashes. This image became the Cornish flag we know today.
The black and white flag is now a powerful symbol of Cornish identity and pride.
